Recently, I had the opportunity to ski in the mountains of Utah. You must know that I have not skied in mountains in many, many years. With the exception of a half day in the Cascades just outside of Seattle two years ago which may or may not count. They are bigger than the hills of Michigan or Wisconsin, which is what I’m used to, but they are not as big as the mountains of Utah. Besides which, I only skied half a day that time because it was snowing so hard we couldn’t see. The only thing worse than an inexperienced middle aged skier is an inexperienced middle aged skier trying to navigate in heavy snow! Scary.
To say I was nervous to ski in mountains (the last time was some 30 plus years ago…true story), would be an understatement. I was extremely nervous. Fortunately, I took a group lesson to get myself acclimated again. Low and behold, I was immediately bumped up to advanced beginner, and then to intermediate. By the end of my first day I was schussing with the best of them.
The secret? Need you ask?
YOGA. Of course. YOGA!
The last time I skied my quads were screaming afterwards. Not so this time. My quads felt strong and fit, happy to be of service in fact. The secret to skiing has to be utkatasana my friends! Think about it. Here’s the pose: And here’s skiing: Yep, I was grateful for each moment I’ve spent in utkatasana the entire time I was skiing. My skis held their edges and I held my balance, no small feat.
There are more ways yoga helped my skiing, of course. There’s no question yoga has helped me become more adventuresome. Whenever I looked down the mountain and got nervous, I thought about all the poses I can now do that I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be doing. I’d take a deep breath and push off! Yoga has taught me to face my fears- be they physical, emotional or mental. Without yoga, I’m not so sure I would have enjoyed the skiing near as much. I can’t wait to go again. Maybe next time I’ll try the black diamonds….
What about you? Thinking about getting back on those skis but a bit unsure? Get focused on Utkatasana! I hear spring skiing is great, it’s not too late!
Thanks for stopping by today.
