Squirrrely Yoga!

Sure was an exciting day at the  yoga studio!   It was such a gorgeous day that we decided to open the front and the back doors to get the cross ventilation.  It was lovely!   We had two morning classes with the breeze fluttering through.  Then it seemed to be getting warm.  It was 83 degrees, so we decided to shut the doors and turn on the air.  Low and behold, seems a squirrel had sneaked in somehow while the doors were open!   It was hiding in the stack of foam rollers by the water cooler.   I heard an odd sound coming from the area and thought it sounded mechanical…it was repetitive….and sounded like it was coming from the CD player or water cooler.  Then my fellow yoga teacher spotted it:  A SQUIRREL in our midst!    You never saw two yogis jump as fast and as far as we did!   It took awhile for the janitor to come and escort the squirrel out.  Meanwhile, we had to cancel a class and give everyone a free pass for another class.   No way were we holding class with a squirrel lurking.  You never know when they might decide to … LUNGE!

All’s well that ends well.  Squirrel is gone.  Not sure we can keep the back door open though.   Rats.   I mean… Squirrels!

Meanwhile, watch for beach yoga pics coming soon.  Love Chicago in the summer!

Thanks for stopping by today.

Wake Up To Yoga!

Now that it seems to be officially spring and the days are longer, it’s time for EARLY MORNING YOGA!   This year, I am teaching “Wake Up Yoga” on Tuesdays from 6:15-7:15 a.m at Namaskar Yoga    http://www.namaskaryoga.com/Namaskar_Yoga/Home.html

There is something very special, very beautiful, about the earliest morning hours in a yoga studio, especially at Namaskar.  It is lovely to see the sun streaming in through the windows, the street is quiet, there’s parking…(and it’s free until 8:00 a.m).   Can’t think of a better way to start your day.  We’ll start with gentle stretches to slough off the slumber, then move into a more active , well rounded practice to fully awaken head to toe.  And of course, the music will fit the mood, you’ll leave with a smile on your face, guaranteed.   Special for this class only, our wonderful neighbor, Asado Coffee Roasters, https://www.asadocoffee.com/ is offering our early morning yogis a coupon worth $1.00 off coffee.

Come join me for Wake Up Yoga beginning Tuesday, May 1.  I’ll be waiting for you!

Thanks ever so much for stopping by,

Confessions of a Homecoming Queen wanna be

Now I’ve done it.  I’ve gone and done something a bit nutty.  I’ve entered the Yoga Journal Talent Search contest.   Yes, you read that right.  I don’t know what possessed me and the minute it was done, I was a bit embarrassed.   But only a bit.  You see, the reason I entered is I truly believe yoga has changed my life, for the better.   I am not sure where I’d be right now without yoga.  Probably a bit lost.  Not as happy.  Definitely not as fit.   When I look at my life pre and post yoga, I know the difference yoga has made.  And I want to share that with anyone who’ll listen!  So that’s why I entered.  I’m also celebrating a fairly major birthday this year that I can hardly bring myself to say (hint: it starts with an S) but I’m proud of it.    Looking forward to it.  And I don’t think I’d be feeling this way without yoga.

Yoga is for everyone.  When I started I was really in bad shape physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.   My husband had passed away after a two year battle with a highly malignant brain tumor.  I was broken.  I could hardly touch my toes, and my scoliosis was causing pain and stiffness.  I was depressed.  I felt as if I were going through the motions of life.  I didn’t immediately spark to yoga by the way.  In fact, I didn’t really care for it all that much in the beginning.  I didn’t get it.  I didn’t feel like it was physically demanding enough to whip me back into shape and I didn’t understand it could give me other, more meaningful benefits.   I stuck with it because it was close to home and seemed like something I could at least drag myself to.  And I liked the teacher.   I loved the teacher.

One day, about two months into it, I noticed I felt just a tiny bit lighter as I walked home from class.  I remember that day still.  It was a turning point.  I kept going to yoga.  A few years later, I signed on to yoga teacher training, lead by my first, and favorite, instructor.  The rest is history.  Yoga healed my heart, mind and body.  I’ve never been stronger, in all ways.   I am quite sure yoga gave me the courage to apply to graduate school, I am now in my third quarter working towards a Masters in Creative Writing.   Yoga has opened my world with new friends and new challenges.   There is always something new to study and learn and fun to be had.  I am honored to be sharing this gift with others and hope I’ll be doing headstands into my nineties!

If you’re so inclined, please take a moment and vote for me (and any of the other lovely yogis you will see on the site).  There’s hundreds of beautiful yogis in the contest, doing far more difficult poses than me, but I’m proud of where yoga has taken me thus far and look forward to the path before me.  Here’s the link:  http://talentsearch.yogajournal.com/view/1726?sort=recent

If this link isn’t working, go to yogajournal.com and find the link for the talent search contest, and type in my name, Cathy Beres   You can vote up to five times a day, voting ends April 17.

Humor me.  I was never a homecoming or prom queen.  Maybe I’m a late bloomer.

Now that’s enough silly self promotion.  Appreciate your patience.  Back to our regularly scheduled content soon!

Namaste and thanks for stopping by!

Doing The Downhill Dog

Recently, I had the opportunity to ski in the mountains of Utah.  You must know that I have not skied in mountains in many, many years.  With the exception of a half day in the Cascades just outside of Seattle two years ago which may or may not count.  They are bigger than the hills of Michigan or Wisconsin, which is what I’m used to, but they are not as big as the mountains of Utah.  Besides which, I only skied half a day that time because it was snowing so hard we couldn’t see.  The only thing worse than an inexperienced middle aged skier is an inexperienced middle aged skier trying to navigate in heavy snow!  Scary.

To say I was nervous to ski in mountains (the last time was some 30 plus years ago…true story), would be an understatement.  I was extremely nervous.  Fortunately, I took a group lesson to get myself acclimated again.  Low and behold, I was immediately bumped up to advanced beginner, and then to intermediate.  By the end of my first day I was schussing with the best of them.

The secret?  Need you ask?

YOGA.  Of course.  YOGA!

The last time I skied my quads were screaming afterwards.  Not so this time.  My quads felt strong and fit, happy to be of service in fact.   The secret to skiing has to be utkatasana my friends!  Think about it.  Here’s the pose:  And here’s skiing:  Yep, I was grateful for each moment I’ve spent in utkatasana  the entire time I was skiing.   My skis held their edges and I held my balance, no small feat.

There are more ways yoga helped my skiing, of course.  There’s no question yoga has helped me become more adventuresome.  Whenever I looked down the mountain and got nervous, I thought about all the poses I can now do that I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be doing.  I’d take a deep breath and push off!  Yoga has taught me to face my fears- be they physical, emotional or mental.   Without yoga, I’m not so sure I would have enjoyed the skiing near as much.  I can’t wait to go again.  Maybe next time I’ll try the black diamonds….

What about you?   Thinking about getting back on those skis but a bit unsure?   Get focused on Utkatasana!  I hear spring skiing is great, it’s not too late!

Thanks for stopping by today.

Winter Solstice

“There are two ways of spreading light; to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”   – Edith Wharton

The days grow longer now, but we are still in the darkness of winter.

“The hero is the one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for me to see by.  The saint is the man who walks through the dark paths of the world, himself a light.”   – Felix Adler

Be the light.

Happy Solstice, Season’s Greetings!

Finally, Friday!

“Happy Feet”

My feet were so happy doing beach yoga last night they flipped right up into Salamba Sarvangasana (aka, shoulderstand).  Now, smile for the camera, please…….

A good time was had by all.  Here’s some more happy feet…. If you ever get to Chicago, you must do beach yoga.  This one courtesy of lululemon, THANK YOU LULULEMON for providing beach yoga all summer long.  And hey, bet you didn’t know there’s palm trees in Chicago!  ;-)   Speaking of lululemon, did I mention they also provided 25 mats for our yoga class at Camp Widow?   What an amazing company!  http://lululemon.com/

Happy Friday, happy feet.  Thanks for stopping by.

Happy Camper, Redux

You will recall in my last post, some very many days ago now, I referenced my overall  “happy camper” feeling, having mainly to do with summer, yoga and life in general.  Now I’m here to talk about a real happy camper.  As in, this is about a real camp that makes some very special people feel special and yes, happy.   It’s called “Camp Widow.”   Sounds happy, right?    Believe it or not, it is!

You may or may not know that I’m a widow, 5 years running now.  I’m not going to dwell on it, if you’d like to learn more about this, you can read all about it here:  www.lessonsfromlou.blogspot.com The important thing is that over the last five years, I’ve moved from depression to pretty much “happy camper” status.  It took a lot of work to make that happen; false starts, experimenting, good times and bad, soul searching, family, friends, kitties, lattes, music, writing, nieces, etc etc etc.  And yoga. Yes, I believe yoga played a very big role in this journey back to life.   And because of it, I’ve wanted to help other women, through yoga, who may be experiencing similiar life transitions.

Enter Camp Widow.   http://www.campwidow.org/ Camp Widow is an amazingly unique weekend of support for widowed people.  Now in it’s third year, 275 people convened for it this past weekend to participate in workshops,  a 5K marathon, and to bond and enjoy each others company.  To meet new friends and old.  To get a bit of R & R.   To cry and laugh.  To feel like a human again, even if just for a few days.  And some did some yoga, led by yours truly.  I was honored and humbled to be a part of this awesome weekend and to bring a little hope and good feelings, through yoga and meditation, to this special group of people.    We did “Warrior Widow” poses (clasp hands behind back, stretch chest upwards toward the sky, open hearts, feel strong), we focused on the idea of hope.   We didn’t have music due to a last minute change in venue, but “hope is the music of grief” (author unknown), and it seemed to work for us.  Later in the day, I led a session called “Meditation Moment”, sharing some simple breathing and meditation techniques that are easily accessible to all.

Yes, there were tears.  I heard some very sad stories of loss, young women left with babies, hopes and dreams dashed, reminding me, yet again, to be grateful for what I had, and what I still have.  But there was happiness, too.  Lots of it.   I met some fantastic people, including the founder of  Soaring Spirits, an inspirational woman who started all this just four short years ago after the unexpected death of her husband in a biking accident.   She saw a need to provide support for widowed people and she has made it happen.

I’m so grateful to have been able to share yoga in this way.  I’m hopeful I helped someone.  But really, I think I’m the one who was helped.   I left feeling uplifted, it’s so great to be able to reach out and connect in person.

If you know of anyone dealing with spousal loss, please share these links with them.  They do not need to feel alone:
